What a lovely painting this is. The mother faithful as ever, appealing to God. The son somewhat doubtful, but going along to make his mother happy. Personally, I have come round to the conclusion that St Augustine wanted to be free of family encumberances in order to pursue his vocation. St Monica or no, he could have regularised his relationship with his concubine and kept his family. It reminds me of Albert Einstien sending his wife Mileva and children away after he became famous.
"All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."
